Spotlight Series: This Is Gendered

written on 02 July 2021 by Indy Hollway & Erin Iwata

Over the next five weeks, we will be spotlighting some projects/ organisations that we think you guys should check out. This could be because of their mission, the resource they are building, or the work they are doing for the community. We hope that you will find these projects as uplifting and useful as we do.

This is Gendered.

This Is Gendered is an online Feminist Encyclopedia that aims to highlight just how much gender affects our day-to-day life. The co-founders Alina Karlsen and Tess de Rooij explain how we sometimes benefit from our gender whilst others face hidden or more open forms of gender discrimination, depending on the situation and other parts of our identities. From ADHD to Facial Recognition, Nursing to Sinks, and right on down to Zoom, this site is constantly generating new content that highlights unfair power balances in our society.

Not only is this site super accessible to all audiences, but its mission is something that we wholeheartedly support. We are all about education and believe that context is crucial to understanding someone’s story and experiences. Although we might be using the same language, This Is Gendered helps us to see that these words have different connotations depending on who is saying them in what context.

We have highlighted many gendered aspects to the church in previous articles, and understanding that this reflects the unequal power structures found in society helps us to correct what we have done wrong, as opposed to holding the church to a different standard. The church should be part of the community, not separate from it. Uncovering these assumptions and biases will only make us stronger and more welcoming to those whose voices are being ignored.

We are excited to see how this website grows and hope that you find it just as nourishing as we have.
